Reb Fountain has covered OMC’s hit song “How Bizarre” for NZ Music Month.
It’s the singer-songwriter’s tribute to the late, great Pauly Fuemana, who, alongside Alan Jansson, wrote and performed the 1995 song as OMC – Otara Millionaire’s Club – making it one of Aotearoa’s most successful and iconic songs.
In Reb’s version, she adds a unique touch, blending her soft, tender indie folk/rock style with the pop sound of the original. Her voice carries a fragile, spoken word quality, aiming to bring out the song’s emotional depth and lyrics.
Produced by Dave Khan and recorded at North Otago’s Sublime Studios with engineer Tom Havard, where Reb recorded her 2021 album Iris, this cover marks her first time covering one of her fellow New Zealand artists.
The cover art, featuring a photograph by legendary American music photographer Chris Cuffaro with half of Fountain’s face obscured, pays homage to the original cover art.
The last time we heard from Reb was with the release of her single “Faithless Lover” last year, described by Rolling Stone AU/NZ as “mesmerising and captivating, an alluring journey into its creator’s probing imagination” upon its release.
Following today’s release, the indie folk singer-songwriter is playing four shows across New Zealand alongside Voom and Taite Music Prize 2024 winner Vera Ellen. She’s also crossing the ditch for two shows in Australia (see full dates below).
