Ratbag is back with her first single of 2024, “pinky boy.”

The track is the rising Auckland-born artist’s first release since her debut EP, why aren’t you laughing?, which shot her into the spotlight last December.

With thrashy alt-rock tracks like “dead end kids,” “rot in love,” and “rats in my walls,” the EP was praised for its raw energy and laid a strong foundation for her budding career.

Signed to Universal Music Australia, ratbag’s becoming an artist to know, boasting around 96,000 monthly Spotify listeners and 46.3k Instagram followers.

“Pinky Boy” keeps the momentum going with a spiteful take on toxic relationships, focusing specifically on problematic ex-boyfriends.

Ratbag puts it best: “‘pinky boy’ is a song about shitty boyfriends and poorly treated pussycats. It describes the dynamic between an unappreciative boyfriend infuriatingly unable to recognise the talent, intelligence, and deep coolness of the woman he’s dating.”

There’s a new video too – it’s from the perspective of a self-proclaimed “pinky boy” who really showcases his own flaws. Watch it below.

And if you’re in Australia, you can catch ratbag live at headline shows in Melbourne on October 30th and Sydney on October 31st.

About her debut EP, ratbag shared: “why aren’t you laughing? is your invitation into my world. I’ve opened the door just a crack, enough for you to see the beginning of what’s going on. These 4 songs had been brewing in a big ol’ bowl of soup in my head and are now ready to be eaten, by you. It feels quite scary to hand over my songs, like I’m handing pieces of me to the world, but I think it’s equally as exciting. I hope you’re hungry.”

Ratbag’s “pinky boy” is out now via EMI Music Australia.
