Ōtautahi-based songwriter Mousey, aka Sarena Close, is set to release her third album.
The Dreams of Our Mothers’ Mothers!, dropping on October 18th, explores “family dynamics, identity, and breaking generational cycles,” focusing on the push and pull between past and present.
Close describes it this way: “As a songwriter, I write about my own experiences, especially the painful ones. This album is no exception. The title of the album is my own spin on an excerpt from German psychotherapist Bert Hellinger who has written and worked a lot with family systems and has theories on how our breaking of destructive/abusive generational patterns relieves the spirits of our ancestors.”
The gripping new single, “Home Alone,” highlights Close’s honest songwriting and haunting vocals, drawing comparisons to Australia’s Julia Jacklin. Watch the stunning music video, directed by Robyn Jordaan and styled by Estelle Schuler, below.
“I wrote this song a few years ago during a period of intense turmoil, including a PTSD diagnosis and a miscarriage. It’s about missing my old life but not wanting to return to it, capturing a moment of being stuck and finding a way forward,” she shares.
“Home Alone” follows last month’s moody “Dog Park,” both tracks leading up to the album.
These releases build on the praise for her 2022 album My Friends, which Rolling Stone AU/NZ called “excellent” for its lyricism and production, as well as her debut Lemon Law.
To support the new album, Mousey will hit the road for a nationwide tour with shows in Christchurch, Wellington, and Auckland. She’ll be joined by her full band and special guest, fellow Ōtautahi songwriter/producer Goodwill.
Mousey’s “Home Alone” is out now via Winegum Records / Concord Publishing. Pre-save The Dreams of Our Mothers’ Mothers! here.
