Molly Payton is coming home for summer shows to celebrate her debut album, YOYOTTA.
The emotionally charged album, named after its title track “You’re On Your Own This Time Again”, secured the London-based Aotearoa singer-songwriter the number 17 spot on Rolling Stone New Zealand’s Best Albums of the Year list.
The review declared: “Whatever Beabadoobee can do, Molly Payton can do just as good. On her highly anticipated debut album, Payton reproduces ’90s alt-rock with a modern twist to strong effect, just as Beabadoobee has done in her own work. (Payton previously supported the Filipino-British musician in Australia and New Zealand.)
“Payton called YOYOTTA “a deeply personal project that depicts the artist at her most vulnerable,” and she gives all of herself in the lyrics and singing; her debut album is an open book, and that’s why it works so well.”
She’ll kick off her tour at SLACKBARN!, a new Hawke’s Bay music festival at Black Barn on January 18th, alongside The Black Seeds, Half Hexagon, Rita Mae, and Muroki.
Her headline shows follow shortly after, with performances on Friday, January 24th, at Double Whammy in Auckland, and Saturday, January 25th, at Meow in Wellington.
Payton will be joined by her bandmates and special guests Daffodils, who will open both headline shows.
Following the release of her debut album, Payton took part in our ‘In My Room’ series, where she performed a stunning acoustic set directly from her bedroom. You can watch the intimate session here.
Last year also saw Payton take part in Georgia Lines’ popular music web series, INTROS, where she was described as a “thoughtful singer-songwriter who cites timeless talents such as Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Leonard Cohen, and Neil Young as major songwriting influences.” You can watch the full episode here.
