Moaning Lisa Return with Compelling New Single, ‘Something’

“We went through some really tough experiences as a band in the past couple of years, and so this song really feels like us learning to back ourselves again.”

It’s been a couple of years between drinks for Moaning Lisa, who have returned with one of their most mesmerising and compelling tracks to date.

Sharing “Something” this morning following its premiere on triple j on Tuesday night, the track follows on from 2018’s “Take You Out” and showcases not only a musical evolution for the group, but a considerable sonic step forward.

Described as a track designed to help one recover and grow after a heartbreak, “Something” is a powerful composition, bolstered by impassioned vocals and energetic punk influences.

“[‘Something’] was really fun and spontaneous to write, and I think we wanted everything that was happening in the song to reflect that,” the group explained. “We went through some really tough experiences as a band in the past couple of years, and so this song really feels like us learning to back ourselves again.”

Working with Ben Moore at Sydney’s Golden Retriever Studios, “Something” had previously been tested on the road, and featuring samples made at their home in Melbourne. Combining their signature do-it-yourself grunge style with ’00s post-punk, the track is a product of their influences, with the old and the new coming together to make something truly mesmerising.

“It’s a weird combination of staying true to our roots by working at our favourite studio and with people we love and trust, but also incorporating all these new sounds,” the group add.

In celebration of their new single (which arrives shortly after their signing to Wollongong’s Farmer & The Owl), Moaning Lisa have also shared an accompanying music video. Directed by William He, the clip features influences from horror movies and uses a single take to showcase singer and guitarist Charlie Versegi running from the unknown near a Melbourne underpass.

“Our long time videographer Will (who’s also responsible for our ‘Lily’ and ‘Good’ clips) found this amazing industrial underpass,” the group explain. “Once we saw the location it made us think of It Follows, a horror movie that we’ve always loved.

“I think we were really trying to pull out and maximise the scary qualities of the song which is something we haven’t ever done before.”

With “Something” officially out in the world, Moaning Lisa are also set to hit the road next month for an east coast tour to launch the new single. Check out the full details below.
