Just weeks on from the announcement of their forthcoming second album, Sydney’s Middle Kids have shared “Cellophane (Brain)” as the latest taste of March’s Today We’re the Greatest.
Released today following a premiere by Zane Lowe on Apple Music’s Beats 1, the three-and-a-half-minute track is a smooth and soaring indie-rock number that feels as though it’s almost custom-built for crowds to sing along to, thanks to its emotive songwriting and passionate performance.
“This feels like a move towards a bold and honest sound,” explained multi-instrumentalist Tim Fitz. “When we were recording, we were asking ‘what is the emotion of this sound’ instead of ‘is this a cool sound’? A guitar wailing and breaking up in the distance is emotional because it sounds like an emotion that we’ve all felt.”
“I remember making a diorama in primary school for an under-the-ocean scene using cellophane,” adds lead singer/songwriter Hannah Joy of the song’s lyrical meaning. “I loved the way cellophane looked but I hated the way it crunched and creased in my hands. It’s one of those weird things you remember sometimes… I’m not even sure if cellophane is an exact metaphor for my mind but it feels connected to the song for me.
“When I consciously started taking note of what was going on in my brain it was usually anxious and negative. If my mind is a minefield of fear and sadness, nothing else can shift my overall sense of myself. But to change one’s thinking is incredibly hard. It’s an inner journey with little extrinsic reward or accountability.”
“Cellophane (Brain)” is set to appear on Today We’re the Greatest, when it arrives on March 19th, alongside previously-released singles “Questions” and “R U 4 Me?”. Middle Kids also recently announced an east coast album launch tour for May, with a pair of new dates being added in Melbourne and Sydney.
Middle Kids’ “Cellophane (Brain)” is out now, while Today We’re the Greatest will be released on March 19th, with pre-orders available now.
