Almost two years on from their last big release, Sydney trio Middle Kids have announced the release of their second studio album, Today We’re The Greatest.
News of the new record follows on from the release of the band’s October single “R U 4 Me?, which in turn followed the release of 2019’s New Songs for Old Problems EP. While the band had managed to find widespread fame with their self-titled 2017 debut EP, it was the release of Lost Friends the following year which put them on the map, receiving an ARIA Award nomination, a J Award, and even resulting in a run of international TV appearances.
Now, the group have revealed that their next full-length will arrive on March 19th, with new single “Questions” accompanying the announcement, as does its official video, directed by W.A.M Bleakley.
“I used to drink a lot and most of my previous relationships revolved around this,” explains vocalist and guitarist Hannah Joy of the origins of the album’s new single. “I don’t think I ever really knew them or they me as a result.
“‘Questions’ is about people being around each other but not being close. People who are in intimate relationships can stop asking questions of each other because they are uncomfortable and confusing.”
Produced in Los Angeles with Lars Stalfors (St. Vincent, Soccer Mommy, Purity Ring), Today We’re The Greatest sees a vulnerability in the Middle Kids camp, served as an “uninhibited product of fearless collaboration” which allowed the the group – and notably Joy herself – to break down self-imposed barriers when it came to writing for the record.
“I want to make music that loves its listener. Music that makes people feel seen, seen in the tiny little places that hide away in their hearts,” she explains. “I want people to hear our music, and feel a sense of love. And when I say love, it can be challenging, intense and tough. But it’s in the guts.”
In addition to the news of the new record, Middle Kids have also announced a three-date album launch tour, which will see the band perform headline dates in Brisbane, Melbourne, and Sydney throughout May.
Middle Kids’ “Questions” is out now, while Today We’re the Greatest will be released on March 19th, with pre-orders available now.
