Mel C has shared a behind-the-scenes glimpse of Rebel Wilson’s next movie, teasing a music-driven comedy that celebrates girl bands and pop music.
Speaking about the project on the Rolling Stone Uncut podcast recently, the Spice Girls star confirmed she spent much of October in London with Wilson shooting the film, titled Girl Group.
“It’s hilariously funny, as you would imagine with Rebel,” she said. “So that was loads of fun. There’s some great music in it, some great performances, and a lot of laughs.”
Wilson has written, directed, and starred in the project – a triple threat turn that Mel C was quick to praise: “She was incredible. The set was… oh my gosh, it was so friendly. It was so joyous. Everyone was lovely. Rebel is very, she’s one of those directors where she just wants you to shine.
“We had our script, which she was saying, ‘just do your thing’, and there was so much ad libbing, you know, and that’s when the funniest moments came.”
The film’s ensemble cast also includes Jennifer Coolidge, Nicole Scherzinger, Randall Park, Sheridan Smith, Jamie Lee O’Donnell, Guz Khan, Jolene, and Loren Gray. Mel C joins Wilson in a girl band called Girlfriends, alongside fellow pop divas – Pussycat Dolls’ Ashley Roberts and All Saints’ Shaznay Lewis.

During the podcast, Mel C also spoke about fresh speculation that the Spice Girls could reform in the near future, prompted by Victoria Beckham, who shared a social media post at Oasis’ concert at Wembley Stadium, writing, “Tempting…”
“I would love to see that happen and I love seeing bands like Five because I understand the story. They had their moment, sometimes things are difficult for young people to get their heads around this massive life change, the schedules are hard, there’s fallouts, all of that,” she said.
“They’ve come back, they’ve rekindled their friendships, they’re selling out arenas, and they’re doing so many things they didn’t do the first time around. So, it’s really beautiful to see, and people love it. It’s about the joy that it brings to people. I think the nostalgia is something really special.”
