Close to two years on from the release of his second album, Aussie indie legend Matt Corby has returned with a new solo single, sharing the immersive “If I Never Say a Word”.
Having released Rainbow Valley back in 2018, Corby spent much of the last two years collaborating with a number of acclaimed artists, including the likes of THE RIOT, Triple One, and most notably, Tash Sultana on “Talk It Out”.
Now, Corby has returned with “If I Never Say a Word”, a genre-shifting piece of music which showcases his soothing vocals, jazzy piano, and an explosive chorus. Much like the way in which the single switches between sounds at the drop of a hat, Corby explains that its origins lay in the beginning of the year, before months spent in lockdown allowed him to finish it off.
“Work started on ‘If I Never Say a Word’ pre-lockdown, and I was originally going to put it into storage until a whole new record was ready, but with the extended period off the road I was able to dive in and bring it to light,” he explains.
Co-produced by Matt himself and Matthew Neighbour (The Avalanches, Missy Higgins), this collaborative effort follows on from Corby’s extended period of working with other artists, and reportedly helped to inform the content of the new song.
“The past year I’ve been collaborating a lot and working in a production and engineering capacity with different acts like THE RIOT, Great Gable and Budjerah, which has been really exciting and sort of fed into this new music,” Corby continued.
“If I Never Say a Word” also comes with a soon-to-be-released music video for the track, directed by Madeline Johnson and produced by Coralie Tapper, and filmed at a rustic farmhouse in the Byron Bay hinterland. The clip will be officially released at 2pm AEST on Friday, August 14th.
At this stage, it remains to be seen whether “If I Never Say a Word” is the first taste of a new record from Corby, though with COVID-19 lockdowns seemingly to inspire enough creativity and time to warrant the completion of this track, it appears that anything may be possible.
Matt Corby’s “If I Never Say a Word” is out now via Island Records Australia.
