Matt Corby has shared a fifth single from his forthcoming album Tragic Magic, “War to Love”.
The new single, built around a smooth bass line, was co-written with award-winning producer Dann Hume (Genesis Owusu, Tones and I) and showcases Corby’s incredible ear for melody, with his expressive, fluid voice front and centre.
“‘War to Love’ is one of my personal favourites from the upcoming record,” Corby said. “I was raised to believe that love is a choice and sometimes it’s not an easy one. Sometimes it really hurts. and the act of choosing love is at the expense of your own selfishness and ego. I tried my best to make that sentiment relatable in this song.”
Expanding on the bruised, low-key beauty of 2023’s Everything’s Fine, the fourth studio album, due out April 17th, from Corby finds pain and joy and moments of pure fun, with liquid bass lines, hushed moments, and soaring falsetto wrapped in ever more sophisticated soul.
“That is the underlying current, musically, and it’s what I grew up on, and what I’ve always been drawn to. Before I wrote songs, I sang soul songs,” Corby said, pointing to soul’s greatest strength. “This record has a big dynamic range of vocal intensity.”
On Tragic Magic, Matt co-produces every track and performs the majority of instruments across the record. “War to Love” follows other singles “Big Ideas”, “Long and Short”, “Know It All”, and “Burn It Down”.
