Mallrat has returned with her first solo single in two years.

The pop singer-songwriter worked with some strong behind-the-scenes talent on “Ray of Light,” with Styalz Fuego (Troye Sivan, Tate McRae) and Grammy Award-winning Oli Jacobs (Harry Styles, Taylor Swift) handling production and mixing duties respectively.

Mallrat says of her new single, “I often feel pulled in certain directions by invisible forces. I secretly suspect that it’s the work of heavenly angels, and sometimes I feel like an alien for these inexplicable knowings. When I imagine this situation through the eyes of somebody who doesn’t know wide-eyed wonder I think, these thoughts are at worst grounds to be admitted to the psych ward, and at best an embarrassing cocktail of narcissism and delusion. Wait, I’m not crazy! I’m locked in and can talk to angels!!”

“Ray of Light” follows Mallrat’s 2022 album, Butterfly Blue, which reached #6 on the ARIA Albums Chart that year. She’s been keeping busy in the intervening two years with several notable collaborations, including with The Chainsmokers (“Wish on an Eyelash Pt. 2”) and Alice Ivy (“Broke My Heart,” also featuring Jelani Blackman).

She also worked with BENEE to create the official song for the FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2023. The vibrant “Do It Again” captured “the essence of unity, celebration, and empowerment that defines the FIFA Women’s World Cup,” according to a press statement.

Mallrat has a couple of tour dates coming up at the end of the year. On December 7th, she’ll perform at Rolling Sets Festival, she’ll also perform at NYE on the Hill over New Year’s.

At the time of writing, it’s unclear if “Ray of Light” is part of a wider project, but any new Mallrat album will be highly-anticipated.

Critics were united in their praise for her previous album Butterfly Blue. “With her long-awaited and frequently brilliant first album, the Australian artist continues to find sublimeness in the mundane,” The Guardian wrote in a three-star review.

“Australian singer-songwriter Grace Shaw floats between cloud rap and dream pop with the tossed-off affectations of a weary internet princess,” Pitchfork commented in an equally positive appraisal.

Mallrat’s “Ray of Light” is out now.
