Mallrat has dropped a new music video in the midst of her east coast headline tour.
After kicking her short but sweet tour at Sydney’s Enmore Theatre last night (April 3rd), the indie-pop singer-songwriter now heads to Brisbane’s Fortitude Music Hall tonight (April 4th), followed by a final show at The Forum in Melbourne on Saturday, April 5th. She’s joined on her headline tour by special guests dine, Denim, and Prophecy Girl.
Mallrat today unveiled a music video for “Hideaway”, a standout track from her latest album, Light hit my face like a straight right.
Directed by her longtime collaborator Tom Carroll, the clip playfully reimagines a medieval fantasy with ecstatic rave energy (watch below). There are noble knights; fearsome dragons; explosive fireworks – it’s got the lot.
Carroll shares: “Grace [Shaw, Mallrat], adorned in her glittering custom chainmail and fur coat, embodied the castle’s rave atmosphere perfectly; she’s a total star. In pre-production, this was the standout styling reference we both really liked (though I didn’t think it was possible with the time available), and Grace just made it happen—magic. The vision came together so naturally… it’s surreal.”
Mallrat’s new album earned a rave review by Rolling Stone AU/NZ upon its release.
“Much has changed in the decade since Grace Shaw debuted her Mallrat project.
“Musically, the Brisbane-born artist finds herself in a different place from where she started, a path along which she has dropped three EPs, sent hearts fluttering everywhere with ‘Charlie’, and now with Light hit my face like a straight right, a sophisticated second album. Like a straight right, she hits us with a sonic laboratory,” we wrote.
“Mallrat’s latest creation is both synthetic and fleshy, with welcome input from the likes of Cub Sport’s Tim Nelson, Australian producer Styalz Fuego, and US music man Buddy Ross. Behind the Auto-Tunery, Mallrat sucker-punches us with her sneakily stunning vocals and songwriting talents.
“Closing track ‘Horses’, a collaboration with Alice Ivy, is a nostalgic trip with more atmosphere than Venus. “I look different now. Do you remember?” We haven’t forgotten, and we’re definitely listening,” the review concluded.
Mallrat opened up about her songwriting and more in an interview with Rolling Stone AU/NZ around her new album.
“The first time I wrote something really personal was ‘Charlie’, and I was terrified people would piece my life together from my lyrics,” she said about penning personal lyrics. “It made me hyper-aware of what I say in conversation, how much of my life I let people in on – like, if they connect the dots, am I too exposed? And then does that make me more guarded in my songwriting?”
