The opening show of Macy Gray’s Australian tour in Melbourne this Friday has been called off.

As reported by The Age, a proposed 24-hour strike by workers at Arts Centre Melbourne on Friday means that the US singer’s show at Hamer Hall that night will not go ahead.

A representative for the venue said that the date will be rescheduled.

“As a result of protected industrial action (a 24-hour stop work) by CPSU, MEAA and ETU union members at Arts Centre Melbourne on Friday, three performances have been cancelled or postponed, including Macy Gray Live at Hamer Hall,” an Arts Centre Melbourne spokesperson said in a statement on Wednesday.

“We respect the right of workers to take protected industrial action, and we’re working closely with our team and unions to progress a new enterprise agreement. We have contacted ticket holders directly and thank them for their patience.

“We are working with Macy Gray management to reschedule the performance. Once confirmed, a new date will be announced and all ticketholders to the cancelled performance will be contacted directly.”

Venue workers are reportedly taking protected industrial action over a long-running dispute about pay, which is scheduled to commence at 12.01am on Friday for 24 hours.

Though staff were reportedly offered a 3 percent raise this year, the Community and Public Sector Union and the Media Entertainment Arts Alliance said that the offer did not keep up with inflation. Members are asking for back pay from October last year.

Gray is yet to publicly address the Melbourne show’s cancellation. Rolling Stone AU/NZ has contacted the US songwriter’s local PR for further comment.

The Grammy Award-winning artist is still scheduled to continue her Australian tour in Adelaide on Saturday. Check out all of the dates below.
