MACEY’s first single of the year is here.

Titled “Clementine”, the candid song saw the Auckland-based singer-songwriter team up with close collaborator Ben Malone.

Like several previous releases, MACEY’s new single was inspired by his time spent writing in London, namely the frantic, anonymous energy of the city’s underground transit.

“I was surrounded by people from every walk of life, observing every character and every interaction,” he explains. “With this music, it feels like I’m looking at everything from a more mature and reflective place rather than reactive. It’s about the tension of being caught in a cycle you can’t quite break.”

“Clementine” follows 2025 singles “Seaside Wishes” and “Mona Lisa Money”, the latter of which we named a Song You Need to Know last year.

MACEY based “Mona Lisa Money” on someone he knew that had hungered his whole life for success, got to the top, and then had to leave that world behind as he got ill.

“He definitely hurt a lot of people and burnt a lot of bridges along the way,” he said.

“It felt like a little warning to myself – don’t get caught up in comparison, envy, having everything all at once… it’s all surface level and leaves you when you die anyway. I hope the song reminds us all to remain present and count every blessing. This is my anti-capitalism anthem, a folk fable wrapped in a blanket of rock and roll, something to make your heart ache and your feet tap.”

MACEY also featured in our Future of Music list last year, and he reflected on how “massive’ 2024 was for him and looked towards the future in an attached interview.

“I’m looking to go much bigger and even better this year and really prioritising pushing MACEY music to the world” he told us at the time.

In exciting news for the musician, MACEY was recently announced as the official support act for Counting Crows on their upcoming Aotearoa tour.

The legendary US rock band and MACEY will perform at Auckland’s Kiri Te Kanawa Theatre on Monday, March 23rd, before they head to Australia — sans MACEY — for shows in Adelaide, Sydney, and Melbourne later in the month. Ticket information is available here.
