Sydney has rolled out the red carpet for MJ the Musical, the four-time Tony Award-winning musical celebrating the life and artistry of Michael Jackson.
The highly anticipated production officially opened at the Sydney Lyric Theatre with a star-studded premiere, featuring none other than Jackson’s son, Prince Jackson, among the VIP guests.
According to the Herald Sun, Jackson was quickly whisked away to a private room after posing for photos, so he did little more than tell the local press pack, “I’m doing great.”
Other VIPs at the premiere included the show’s producer, Michael Cassel, as well as TV hosts Samantha Armytage Sonia Kruger, Kylie Gillies and David Campbell, musician-turned-Olympic swimmer Cody Simpson, and members of The Wiggles.
MJ the Musical transports audiences back to 1992, offering an intimate glimpse into Jackson’s creative process as he prepares for his Dangerous World Tour. Crafted by two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Lynn Nottage, the musical is structured around an imagined MTV interview, revealing both the dazzling spectacle and the personal struggles of the King of Pop.

The Australian show marks the fifth production of the Broadway blockbuster since its debut in February 2022, following successful runs in London, Germany, and across the United States.
“Since our very first preview, Australian audiences have embraced this show with an energy and passion beyond our wildest expectations,” said original Broadway producer Lia Vollack. “The love for MJ here is truly extraordinary, and it’s been incredible to witness the joy, excitement, and electric atmosphere that fills the theatre every night.”
Australian producer Michael Cassel echoed the sentiment, although noted he may have underestimated the enthusiasm of local fans. “From the fans coming dressed up, the audience members dancing in their seats to the people gathering at stage door every night to meet our cast, this electrifying show has truly captured Sydney’s heart and I can’t wait for more people to join us as we celebrate Michael Jackson’s artistry and creativity every night with our brilliant cast.”
Featuring over 25 of Jackson’s greatest hits, including “Beat It”, “Smooth Criminal”, “Man in the Mirror”, and “Thriller”, the musical has been seen by over a million people worldwide and won four Tony Awards, including Best Choreography for Christopher Wheeldon OBE, who said he couldn’t be prouder of the Australian company.
“From the very first rehearsal, they have brought an incredible dedication, passion, and artistry to this production, making it their own while honouring Michael Jackson’s artistry and creativity,” he said. “Seeing MJ come to life here in Sydney with such phenomenal talent has been an absolute joy. I am beyond thrilled that this show has found a home here.”
The Australian company is led by critically acclaimed performer Roman Banks, who made history as the first African American performer to star in Dear Evan Hansen on Broadway before played the titular role in MJ the Musical more than 200 times across the US.
With people already coming to see the previews multiple times, and the season extended until June to cater to demand, Banks said he was excited to see what the rest of his Australian debut holds. “I’m just so grateful to honour an artist like Michael Jackson whose message and influence has resonated with every corner of the world,” he said. “If these last few weeks are a taste of what to expect during my time here in Sydney, I’ll happily take a plate full.”
MJ the Musical continues at the Sydney Lyric Theatre. The season has been extended to 22nd June 2025. Tickets available here. Visit www.mjthemusical.com.au for details.
