Kim Gordon has released a new song, “Banging on the Freeway,” alongside a music video for the track. The clip was directed by her daughter and frequent collaborator Coco Gordon Moore.
The track is a clattering, mesmerizing blast of propulsive noise rock crossed with some far-flung hip-hop influences as Gordon sinks into repetitive hooks and phrases, including the titular “Bangin’ on the freeway” and lines like “Bad TV on repetition.” The video, meanwhile, largely comprises shots of Gordon and her daughter doing the most Los Angeles thing anyone can do in Los Angeles — driving — interspersed with hazy footage of someone dancing to the song.
“Banging on the Freeway” comes off the digital deluxe edition of Gordon’s sophomore solo LP, The Collective, which is out now via Matador. It features two new additions, the previously-released “ECRP,” which also got a Moore-directed music video, and “Bangin’ on the Freeway.” “Feel like I’m just getting started!” Gordon noted in a statement. “Thanks for all the love!”
The physical deluxe edition set of The Collective will arrive on Dec. 13 as a silver vinyl record that includes a 7-inch with the two bonus tracks housed in the LP sleeve. The set is available to pre-order now.
Gordon released The Collective, a follow-up to her 2019 full-length debut No Home Record, in March. “The songs come off as avant-garde, trap, old-school hip-hop, noisy, or musique concrète depending on where you drop the needle,” Rolling Stone wrote in a review of the LP. She told Rolling Stone that she’s “not a natural singer,” but has learned to use that to her benefit.
“I know what works for me in the sense of using rhythm and space, and I really do like working off rhythms,” Gordon explained. “I really just wanted to do more of that. I feel much freer in what I’m singing about in a certain way. I don’t feel like I have to hold myself back in some way.”
Gordon, who has been touring throughout the year, will head to Europe for a run of dates later this month before wrapping up the year at Mexico City’s Corona Capital Festival in November.
