Keith Urban‘s visual for brand new single “Out The Cage” shows of the genre-fluid music star’s true passion for collaboration.
The music video, filmed in Sydney with country-trap songwriter/producer and performer, Breland, followed a two-week quarantine for the pair. Mirroring the single’s lightning-bolt intensity and the track’s lyrical theme of wanting to bust out of your surroundings, the clip features a quick cut stream of imagery as the pair feed off of each other’s energy.
Don’t know just how long but I’ve
Been trapped in here quite a while
Wonder if I’ll make it out, ahh, ahh
I miss my friends, I miss the sky
Feel like I just live to die
“Out The Cage” song collaborator and legendary funk master Nile Rodgers filmed his part for the visual in Connecticut. This single marks the first time the pair have collaborated on a Keith Urban release since “Sun Don’t Let Me Down” from Urban’s 2016-released, number-one album Ripcord.
“The freneticism of the rhythm makes me wanna take off and start running or……just break something,” says Keith Urban of the track. “’Out the Cage’ began with an idea I had to build upon a Nineties English house breakbeat rhythm; I’ve always loved Prodigy, Fatboy Slim, those kinds of rhythmic energies.”
“Out The Cage” was one of four tracks written during Urban’s Covid-induced lockdown in 2020.
“I really wanted this song to speak to liberation of all sorts, even if that’s somebody in a dead-end job, somebody that’s stuck in a relationship that’s going nowhere and they can’t get out, someone imprisoned in their own mind.” says Urban.
The multi-platinum, five-time ARIA and Grammy award winning artist continues to see the accolades roll in from his latest album, The Speed Of Now Part 1. The record, released last September, marks the fourth number one album debut in the United States, Canada and Australia.
The album features “One Too Many”, Urban’s double Platinum ARIA number six duet with P!nk, the US Top 5 hit “God Whispered Your Name,” as well as international chart climbers “Polaroid,” and “Superman”.
In December this year Keith Urban will tour The Speed Of Now Part 1 across Australia with Perth band Birds of Tokyo announced as the special guest.
