Keith Urban stopped by The Tonight Show to play his recent song, “Chuck Taylors,” alongside his live band. The mid-tempo rocker comes off the country singer’s new LP, High, out now. The singer also took the opportunity cover Sabrina Carpenter‘s “Espresso” on the banjo.
Urban announced his new album on Instagram back in June, explaining that it was borne out of a “prior record” he started working on in 2022 but never finished. He described High as “completely expressive, true, honest and is so much more of what I actually wanted to say when making that scrapped record. I hope these songs bring you joy, levity, some new understanding, energy, and escape!”
Urban sat down with host Jimmy Fallon to discuss the album, which is when he decided to show off his “Espresso” cover in a six-string banjo. Fallon mentioned that he knows Urban is a fan of covers, having previous tackled songs by Ariana Grande and Taylor Swift. Urban explained he is just looking for a “well-written song” when picking a pop number to reimagine.
“Taylor’s songs, they’re well-written,” he said. “The bones are good, every one of them. And so you can do them in any form. You can do any well-written song in almost any style.”
Urban is currently on the road promoting High. In October, the musician will kick off a 10-date residency at the Fontainebleau in Las Vegas, with additional dates scheduled in February 2025. He will also perform at the GoldenSky Festival in Sacramento on Oct. 18 and at the Turning Stone Resort Casino in Verona, NY on Dec. 6.
