Kathleen Hanna, Ad-Rock, Tom Morello, Fred Armisen, and more have joined forces for Build Art Make Change’s (BAMC) Contra-ICE Vol. 1: ICE OUT. The benefit compilation, which arrives on Oct. 2 via SoundsGood Records, will donate proceeds to National Day Laborer Organizing Network and Unión del Barrio.
The collaboration, which comprises exclusive and previously unreleased music, pairs more than 30 icons from music, spoken-word, and comedy to raise funds for immigrant rights and battle the inhumane action from ICE. Among the participants are Jello Biafra, Ozomatli, Money Mark, and David J (Bauhaus, Love and Rockets). Limited edition vinyl of the compilation is available for preorder. It will also be available digitally and on CD, as well as in a premium vinyl version signed by some of the compilation artists, including Contra-ICE artistic director and cartoonist Lalo Alcaraz.
The first single is a cover of DJ Snake and Justin Bieber’s “Let Me Love You.” The rendition features Kathleen Hanna, Ad-Rock, Money Mark, Fred Ortiz, and Frank Figueroa.
“It’s not often you get to play music with your favorite people while working with a grassroots organization like Contra-ICE. They are passionately fighting against fascism and white supremacy, which is something none of us can afford to ignore,” Hanna said in a statement. “Mario Caldato Jr. (Beastie Boys) produced our song which was a dream come true for me. Thank you so much to Contra-ICE for making this happen and allowing me to represent what we collectively stand for.”
The nonprofit organisation BAMC — which works to empower vulnerable communities via artistic expression “to raise awareness, shift public discourse, and drive meaningful policy reform — will hold a daylong event featuring performances from artists appearing on the compilation on Oct. 3 at La Cita in Los Angeles. Tickets go on sale Friday, Aug. 14, at 10 a.m. local time on Contra-ICE’s official website.
“Contra-ICE is not only an album. It is not only a collective. It is a cultural infrastructure built to support frontline organisations, amplify immigrant voices, and mobilise creatives who believe that love is not passive; it’s organised. Music has always been my first language. Justice has always been my inheritance,” BAMC founder Dali Colorado, who curated the compilation, said in a statement. “Contra-ICE is where those two lineages meet, urgently, unapologetically, and with LOVE OVER FEAR.… As a DJ, I approached this project as a curator, carefully crafting a listening experience that unfolds as a journey. Every track, transition, and voice serves a purpose, inviting listeners to move through moments of grief, anger, resilience, hope, and ultimately, action.”
