Julia Stone is set to make her return to the live stage this November, with a pair of shows being announced alongside the release of her new single, “Unreal”.
The new track follows on from a handful of releases from Stone this year, with “Break” arriving in July, months after a cover of “Beds Are Burning” appeared on the Songs For Australia compilation which Stone curated to aid relief following the devastating Australian bushfires.
“Unreal” sees Stone continuing her powerful creative streak, with vocal blips preceding a rich, smooth composition which uses a sunny exterior to hides the dark meaning lurking beneath, as it retells the experience of feeling alienated in a relationship.
Created with close collaborator and producer Thomas Bartlett, Stone notes that the track saddles the border of darkness and delight, and serves as the latest taste of a larger body of work still to come.
“When I’m with Thomas, I feel amazing! It’s all about making sounds with him and being in the studio, and having that experience,” she explains. “The song sort of transformed; it’s also a bit about the feeling of somebody making you feel like you can never quite be real and be yourself.”
While usually any talk of hearing a song such as this live seems to have been relegated to distant memory, Stone has also announced that fans will get a chance to see her perform this November, holding a pair of two intimate shows at Sydney’s Factory Theatre.
“With the upcoming concert series, I wanted to take part in the healing of hearts in these troubling and uncertain times,” she notes. “Live music will always bring people together, celebrate our humanity and nurture our bond. Music heals as much as it excites, and I want to do all I can to re-establish our connection to one another. I’m beyond excited to play these shows in my hometown.”
Stone is also set to premiere the official music video for “Unreal” at 5:30pm AEST via YouTube.
