Jessica Mauboy has shared a new single as the release of her fifth studio album, Yours Forever, grows closer.
Titled “Forget You”, the track was written by Mauboy alongside Sam De Jong and Grace Pitts and is an ode to embracing one’s “inner strength and sass.”
“Together we crafted a musical narrative that speaks to independence and the joy of embracing life. Whether it’s a bad boss, a breakup or waking up from a nightmare, some things in life can get the better of you. This song is about knowing that you can be strong and say a big ‘Forget You’ to those things holding you back,” Mauboy explains.
“Forget You” comes with a music video directed by Lawrence Lim, which shows Mauboy battling a day that refuses to go right, watched over by her cute dog Leo (watch below).
“Together with Lawrence, we came up with a concept that included a bit of comedy, and I loved acting out the different scenes of how sometimes, life gives you lemons, but there’s a way of finding the joy in life and making lemonade,” Mauboy says of the video.
“We wanted to create relatable scenarios as ‘Forget You’ is just that, a song that anyone can take and apply to their own story and use as an uplifting anthem to get through a tough time.
“It goes without saying that I think my co-star in the video is my favourite yet and is destined for great things. Leo’s debut acting role is sure to land him further opportunities and no doubt his calendar will fill up fast with gigs and appearances!”
“Forget You” will feature on Mauboy’s forthcoming album, Yours Forever, which will be released next month. “Yours Forever is me at my truest self, comfortable in my skin, not comparing myself or trying to be someone or something that anyone expects me to be.” she says.
“When you strip it all back, musically it’s beautiful melodies, storytelling lyrics, rhythms that connect with the soul, and it has a depth that I’ve never gone to or shared before.”
Yours Forever follows Mauboy’s 2019 album Hilda, which topped the ARIA Albums Chart and was nominated for Album of the Year at the 2020 ARIA Awards. Alongside her new single, the album will also feature “Give You Love”, Mauboy’s collaboration with Jason Derulo.
Mauboy – who was the final secret headliner at The Courtyard Presented by Rolling Stone at SXSW Sydney – will tour Australia in support of her new album in 2024, performing 22 dates across regional and metro cities. She’ll also head to New Zealand for a one-off show in Auckland at the end of the run. More information about the tour can be found here.
