Jessica Mauboy has shared another taste of her forthcoming album, Yours Forever.
Titled “Flashback”, the sentimental track was written with PNAU’s Nick Littlemore, Toby Anagostis, and James Gales.
“‘Flashback’ is a song that holds a very special place in my heart – this song captures the exhilarating feeling of falling in love” Mauboy says.
“We’d begin each session with all the lights in the studio turned off and start improvising together – the guys would lay down synth and guitar ideas while I freestyled melodies over the top. That day, Nick came into the vocal booth and gave me the prompt to write about my love story, the love I have now with my husband. How do you capture that undeniably big love and share that with the world?”
Mauboy continues: “It’s a lump in your throat, butterflies in your stomach, a giddy feeling. The lyrics “Flashback I’m frozen, standing right in front of the one I’m gunna love” is reminiscent of when I first met my husband. I remember feeling frozen, my mind clearing, and the distinct feeling that our connection was a premonition of our love to come.”
“Flashback” is accompanied by a music video, directed by Rowena Rasmussen and Joel Rasmussen, which you can watch below.
Mauboy’s forthcoming album will be released next February. According to the pop star, Yours Forever will present the artist’s journey in search of self-discovery and empowerment. “Yours Forever is me at my truest self, comfortable in my skin, not comparing myself or trying to be someone or something that anyone expects me to be.” she says.
“When you strip it all back, musically it’s beautiful melodies, storytelling lyrics, rhythms that connect with the soul, and it has a depth that I’ve never gone to or shared before.”
Yours Forever follows Mauboy’s 2019 album Hilda, which topped the ARIA Albums Chart and was nominated for Album of the Year at the 2020 ARIA Awards. Alongside her new single, the album will also feature “Give You Love”, Mauboy’s collaboration with Jason Derulo.
Mauboy – who was the final secret headliner at The Courtyard Presented by Rolling Stone at SXSW Sydney – will tour Australia in support of her new album in 2024, performing 22 dates across regional and metro cities. She’ll also head to New Zealand for a one-off show in Auckland at the end of the run. More information about the tour can be found here.
