‘In My Room’ With Teenage Joans

Adelaide’s Teenage Joans share a stripped-back rendition of ‘Something About Being Sixteen’ for Rolling Stone’s ‘In My Room’ series.

Teenage Joans have offered up a handful of stripped back tunes for Rolling Stone’s ‘In My Room’, a series in which artists perform from home following a year which has seen live shows become a rarity.

These last couple of years have seen a massive rise to fame for Adelaide’s Teenage Joans. The duo – made up of Cahli Blakers and Tahlia Borg from SA’s north-eastern suburbs – first made waves on the local scene thanks to an appearance on the Adelaide Laneway Festival lineup in 2019 as part of the Girls Rock! Showcase, and continued to create buzz by way of a standout performance at that year’s A Day of Clarity festival.

Of course, the pair weren’t anywhere close to being done yet, and thanks to the response to 2020’s “Three Leaf Clover”, Teenage Joans took out the annual triple j Unearthed High competition – making them the second SA winner in a row after Gawler’s George Alice in 2019.

Since then, the good times have kept on coming for the band, despite a noted inability to tour thanks to a global pandemic. That hasn’t stopped them though, with Teenage Joans topping play/pause/play’s Heaps Good 50 for the second year in a row, placing in the Hottest 100 for the first time, and unleashing their new single “Something About Being Sixteen” two weeks ago.

Speaking to triple j about the track, singer and guitarist Cahli Blakers explained that it’s “the epitome of Teenage Joans”, and the “most favourite song we’ve ever written”.

Arguably their biggest and most accomplished song to date, “Something About Being Sixteen” is filled with slick riffs, passionate vocals, and ever-relatable lyrics that speak to someone sitting on their “shitty couch hoping things work out”.

“That verse is just about giving hope to people who feel hopeless, and our music inspiring them, which is the best thing ever,” added Blakers.

With Teenage Joans currently in Melbourne to wrap up their ‘Something About Being Sixteen Is Boring’ tour with fellow Adelaideans TOWNS, Cahli and Tahlia were kind enough to share an acoustic performance of their latest single for Rolling Stone’s ongoing ‘In My Room’ series.
