Influential Aussie musician Juanita Stein has laid down a pair of acoustic tracks for the latest edition of Rolling Stone’s ‘In My Room’, a series in which artists perform from home while in quarantine.
If you’ve looked at the Australian music scene at any point over the last couple of decades, then the name Juanita Stein would be a familiar one to you. Having risen to fame as the vocalist and guitarist of Waikiki, the group eventually moved to London, where they took on the name Howling Bells.
In recent years though, Stein has been focusing on her solo output, with three records released since 2017. Her most recent, October’s Snapshot, was met with widespread critical acclaim, and received a four-and-a-half star review from Rolling Stone.
“Snapshot is a letter of dedication to the life of her father. As any good letter does, it achieves moments of tension and release, moments of sheer disbelief and cognisance,” wrote Poppy Reid. “It stays with you long after putting it down, and it beckons you back time and time again.”
With the record now out in the world, Stein shared a pair of acoustic tracks from the new album. Performing from her garden in Brighton, Stein begins at the end of her album, delivering “In The End” before offering a gorgeous rendition of the exceptional “Hey Mama”.
