Irish songwriter, producer and artist Cian Ducrot has joined us for the latest instalment of Rolling Stone’s ‘In My Room’, a series in which artists perform from home following a year which has seen live shows become a rarity.
It’s been a whirlwind for the 23-year-old former busker, who became a rising star upon being signed to the label that discovered Billie Eilish, Dark Room Recordings.
Now, the musician has released his third single featuring Canadian artist Cate, titled “Know Me Again”, the track being yet another indicator of Cian’s masterful handling of evoking raw emotion through music.
A feat in songwriting excellence, the pair’s voices flutter across the melody of “Know Me Again” slowly lulling, followed by a crescendo into a massive peak as Cian’s booming vocals and production pairs up against Cate’s saccharine-like vocal work.
Performing on the keyboard from an ambient purple-tinged studio for Rolling Stone’s ‘‘In My Room’ series, Cian showcased more of his raw talent with a slew of emotional tracks that highlight his serene vocals and musical aptitude.
Speaking on the making of the single, Cian shared: “Cate and I wrote “Know Me Again” over FaceTime, and then we kind of forgot about it for a long time. It wasn’t until my nearly five-year relationship had ended that we came back to this song to finish it, and we realised how special it was.
“This was one of the first songs Cate and I ever wrote together, and it was the start of a wonderful friendship and songwriting journey. This song means the world to us both.”
With his previous single “Not Usually Like This” racking up an impressive million streams on Spotify since its release on Friday, 5th February, 2021, Cian recently opened up to his 659,000 followers on TikTok about his struggles prior to landing his big break.
“Considering I was homeless a year ago, this is pretty insane,” he said in the clip showcasing the single’s billboard.
“In February of last year, I was sleeping on people’s couches. I had about £500 to my name,” Ducrot elaborated in an interview with Irish Examiner.
“It was tough. But I always saw the bright side. That’s what drew me to LA. I had no money. I had nothing going for me in my career. I didn’t have a label. But I felt something was in the air. Something was coming.”
Opening up about the poignant song about heart-wrenching breakups that are so devastating that you wish to be reintroduced to your love to start afresh, Cian revealed he “learned a lot” during the cathartic writing process for the track.
“”Not Usually Like This” was the first time that I really dug into my past and was able to go to a place and write a song about something that I previously wouldn’t have been able to put into words,” Cian said.
“It was both difficult and easy, but I learned a lot from writing this song.”
