Home Brew have shared a new music video for “80 Down Scenic”, taken from their 2023 comeback album, Run It Back.
Directed by Luca Macioce and Tak Soropa, the clip perfectly complements the track, featuring Kiwi shout-outs to Tāne Mahuta, Kererū, and our other national treasure, Patrick Gower.
The video kicks off with a therapy session where Tom Scott reflects on his mental health rituals: journaling, gardening, and self-medication. He asserts, “When things get hectic, I go for a drive.”
Scott then embarks on a scenic ride, delivering smooth, poetic bars with producer Haz Beats riding shotgun. They toss CDs and spliffs, leaving their worries behind in Aotearoa’s sun-dappled forests and beaches (watch below).
Always humble, Scott confessed on Instagram: “All characters and events portrayed are purely fictional… I actually drive a forest green 86 Toyota Corolla with rotting paint and a smashed side mirror ’cause I hit a rubbish bin last week trynna get the kid to Kohanga on time.”
Speaking more about the song, he added: “This song came to us in 30 minutes. Literally just scribbled the whole thing down on Haz’s refil pad while he was making the beat. Couldn’t make my hands move as fast as the thoughts. Same when we wrote blowing smoke. (They feel like sister songs to me) I never know if that means they’re good or bad. But I like that they’re not overcooked.”
Home Brew returned with their striking album, Run It Back, after a lengthy hiatus last December.
It was voted by Rolling Stone AU/NZ as one of the 25 Best New Zealand Albums of 2023, praised as a “set of fresh cuts that reminded everyone of just what made Home Brew so special in the first place… A reunion definitively worth the wait.”
