Gordi has returned with her latest single, sharing the immaculate “Volcanic” today.

Having released her debut album Reservoir back in 2017, the last few years had been a little quiet for Gordi, the musical moniker of Sophie Payten.

Releasing an acoustic EP in 2019, and appearing on the bushfire relief single “The Cost” earlier this year, Gordi officially returned back in February, releasing “Sandwiches” as the first taster of her forthcoming second album, before “Aeroplane Bathroom” followed soon after.

Now, with Our Two Skins set to be released on June 26th, Gordi has shared her latest single, “Volcanic”. Written in Stockholm 2018 following a call from her parents “urging her to share the truth of her sexuality to her ailed grandmother”, Gordi describes the track as being a “kind of exorcism”.

“It speaks to a rush of anxiety – about why, about what is real and what is not, about the drama of it, about the vortex of it,” Gordi explains. “When it surges you can feel paralysed and out of control at the same time – ‘shut down’ and ‘manic.’

“Its self-destructive nature can be so crippling. I wanted the song to feel like a wave of anxiety. The tempo never changes but the piano solo starts at half-time and rushes until it is double the speed, though the beat never changes. And then suddenly; it’s over.”

Accompanied by a gorgeous Madeleine Purdy-directed video, both the clip and Gordi’s upcoming album were made at her family farm in Canowindra, NSW.

Working with Chris Messina and Zach Hanson, the production team behind Bon Iver, the record was created in near-seclusion, with no phone reception, wi-fi, and basic facilities allowing Gordi to explore her feelings of anxiety and isolation.

Having recently announced she’ll be returning to her job as a doctor during the coronavirus pandemic, Gordi is currently awaiting placement, and is most likely to be placed in a pop-up ‘fever clinic’ or rural hospital. Nevertheless, we can only assume she’ll be able to celebrate the release of new record when it arrives in late June.
