With just three weeks left before her third album, Like Plasticine, drops, Melbourne indie-pop artist Gordi has revealed another single, “Head Rush”, an ode to her time spent in New York City and how all things eventually have to end.
The track started life as an earworm, and before she knew it, “Head Rush” was realised. “I was sitting at my friend, Sarah’s, Wurlitzer in Los Angeles, playing the same thing over and over again and then ‘Head Rush’ arrived. It was one of those songs that came in a flurry of words out of my mouth quicker than I could write them down,” Gordi shares.
“I was thinking about New York, a place where I’ve spent a lot of time over the years, where my friend used to live in a rundown place on Division St. ‘Head Rush’ is about how everything comes to an end eventually. About having to grow up before you’re ready. That transition from reckless ecstasy to stability. From chaos to plans.”
The track, which was produced by John Congelton, has more of a fast-paced energy than the previously released singles — “you’ve gotta turn the last part up real loud,” as Gordi says. That same energy translates into the music video, an abstract video diary of NYC produced by her long-time collaborator Madelaine Purdy, who said, “With this video I just wanted to make it feel joyful and unceremonious. Casual and off the cuff.”
The single comes amidst a busy series of appearances by the Australian star, who in recent months has performed her singles “Peripheral Lover” and “Lunch at Dune” on The Kelly Clarkson Show and CBS Mornings while also touring Europe with Foster the People.
Like Plasticine charts the transformative experiences of the last few years of her life, including coming out and working as a frontline doctor during the COVID-19 pandemic, and will release on all platforms on August 8th via Mushroom Music.
