Only a few months after the release of his second album, Struggler, Genesis Owusu has released a new single, “Survivor”.
It’s an official extension of Struggler, which interestingly explores perseverance and other aspects of human nature over 12 chaotically beautiful tracks. Owusu says his album is “ a story about a Roach, that runs and runs, trying not to get stepped on by God. Steeped in mystery and metaphor, the story is a celebration of the inspiring stubbornness of the human will to survive. Through pandemics, bushfires and wars, we’re still going to find a way to make it to tomorrow, and I think that’s beautiful.”
The Ghanaian-Australian artist’s second album won three ARIA Awards in November, including the coveted Album of the Year award. You can watch the accompanying music video for “Survivor” below. Owusu teamed up with the widely recognised Lisa Reihana for the post-apocalyptic themed music clip.
In between Struggler and his 2021 debut album, Smiling With No Teeth, Owusu’s schedule has been jam-packed. Outside of releasing he’s been on the road non-stop: he’s supported international acts like Thundercat and Australian acts like Tame Impala, headlined (and sold out) the iconic Sydney Opera House, and played at the equally iconic Madison Square Garden.
And he’s already back on the road again, starting this week. Owusu’s national tour kicks off tonight in Perth and he’ll have some of the best support acts alongside him for the remainder of the tour dates. Not only will Else Wameyo, one of the best artists in the country join him, so too will the thrilling The Black Dog Band, and none other than Atlanta hip hop duo, Earthgang.
Following his Perth show, Owusu will perform in Melbourne, Canberra, Brisbane, Sydney, and Adelaide before Christmas. He’s also scheduled to perform at New Zealand’s Nest Fest in early January.
Genesis Owusu’s Struggler is out now.
