Two years ago marked a decade of Josh Tillman performing as Father John Misty. The singer-songwriter will look back on his career with the compilation Greatish Hits: I Followed My Dreams and My Dreams Said to Crawl, out now digitally and on vinyl Aug. 16 via Sup Pop.
Paired with the announcement is the new track “I Guess Time Just Makes Fools of Us All,” which Tillman has been sporadically performing live since 2019. Opening with a wildly entertaining saxophone, the track harkens back to the jazzy delights of 2022’s Chloë and the Next 20th Century. “The great-ish minds of my generation,” Tillman sings, “Gladly conscripted in the war/Of defending any Goliath/That would deign darken the door.” Yep, he’s back!
“I Guess Time Just Makes Fools of Us All” is the final track on Greatish Hits. The rest of the track list features gems from his albums dating back to 2012’s Fear Fun, not arranged chronologically (“Disappointing Diamonds Are the Rarest of Them All,” from 2018’s God’s Favorite Customer, is Track Two; while the title track to 2015’s I Love You, Honeybear is positioned in the penultimate spot).
Tillman is slated to tour in September, with dates supporting Kacey Musgraves and others headlining. Last year, he appeared on his longtime collaborator Lana Del Rey’s Did You Know That There’s a Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd, on the track “Let the Light In.”
