A jury vote domination has seen Switzerland’s Nemo win the 2024 Eurovision Song Contest in an emotionally-charged grand final in Malmö, Sweden.
Switzerland won with an overall score of 591 points, finishing ahead of Croatia’s Baby Lasagna on 547 points, with Ukraine duo Alonya Alonya and Jerry Hell third on 453 points.
Nemo is the first non-binary artist to win the competition in its 68-year history with their song ‘The Code’.
They dominated the jury vote, racking up a massive 365 points. They were followed by France’s Slimane on 218 points, and Croatia’s Baby Lasagna on 210 points.
Sydney’s Silia Kapsis, representing Cyprus, finished 15th overall on 78 points.
Norway’s Gote had the dubious honour of finishing last on 16 points, while the United Kingdom’s Olly Alexander finished 18th despite receiving 0 points in the public vote.
Drama unfolded throughout grand final day in Malmö with protests outside the arena, contestants being removed from the competition, and jury representatives pulling out.
Groups of pro-Palestine protesters clashed with police outside Malmö Arena and Hyllie train station in the hours before the show, with some protesters doused with pepper spray.
The contest was also rocked by withdrawals earlier in the day, with jury representatives from Finland and Norway pulling out from reading votes.
Netherlands contestant Joost Klein was disqualified by organisers following an incident after Thursday’s second semi final. Klein allegedly threatened a female production team member who has made a complaint to police.
Ireland’s Bambie Thug missed their final rehearsal due to discussions with organisers over an unknown issue, believed to be concerns about commentary about them on Israeli television.
Thug was one of three performers who made statements calling for peace at the end of their performances – along with France’s Slimane and Portugal’s Ilonda.
