ENOLA has returned with their first single of the year, “It’s Not Love”.
It’s the first release from ENOLA – the solo project of Ruby Marshall – since last year’s well received EP, All Is Forgiven. (We named that EP’s closing track, “Waves”, as a Song You Need to Know.)
“It’s Not Love” marks a departure from ENOLA’s usual brooding post-punk sound, leaning into bold electronic territory with stylish synths and electronic drums. (Although it’s not a total surprise, given ENOLA’s roots as an electronic producer and DJ.)
Influenced punk acts such as Patti Smith, Joy Division, and IDLES, ENOLA aims to make music that hits you right in the feels. “What moves me the most is a willingness to be vulnerable, and whatever you’re saying, for it to be really sincere,” they share.
With that in mind, “It’s Not Love” will have mass appeal as ENOLA dissects the messiness of situationships, asking the tough questions.
“It’s about shaking the habitual tie,” shares ENOLA. “The song is about how we stay in situations and dynamics that don’t serve us because we have deep rooted bonds and attachments to people, places and the past. Sometimes, it’s not real love that keeps us in situations, but more fear, guilt & inability to let go.
“The song is essentially asking, Why am I doing this? Why am I here? Why am I investing in this person or situation & does this make me happy? Is it love that keeps you there, is it a sense of familiarity & belonging? The weight of responsibility? And when was the last time you asked yourself this question. Is it love keeping me here? Is it love keeping us together?”
It’s a big month for ENOLA, who heads over to the UK to showcase at The Great Escape this week, and they’ve got even more shows lined up across Europe after that (more information here).
And they’re not just making music – they’re also gaining acclaim, scoring multiple AIR Awards nominations, including Breakthrough Independent Artist of the Year and Best Independent Punk Album or EP for All Is Forgiven, with producer Bonnie Knight also nominated for Independent Producer of the Year.
