Empire of the Sun are aiming to release a brand new album “within the next year,” it can be revealed.
2024’s Ask That God came eight years after their previous album, but in a new interview with Rolling Stone AU/NZ, Nick Littlemore, in support of PNAU’s new effort, AHHCade, has revealed the Sydney-formed duo want to get a new record out very soon.
“I’d imagine the Empire will probably come out within the next year,” he said. “We pretty much have all the songs now… I have high hopes for it now. We kind of went straight in after making the film in Thailand and started making new things. It feels really exciting. Luke’s [Steele] never sung better. I think all this touring has made his voice so strong, super focused. We’re both sober, which is interesting…”
Empire of the Sun are still touring Ask That God globally and recently became the first Australian act to sell out three headline shows at London’s famous Alexandra Palace. Empire performed to over 30,000 fans at the shows, which took place on June 24th, 27th and 28th. Only a handful of major acts have accomplished the same feat at the venue, which includes Florence + The Machine, Fred Again… and Dermot Kennedy.
But Littlemore says once Steele has wrapped up touring commitments, they will ramp up for what will be the band’s fifth album.
“We have a lot of songs for this new album, and the tricky thing is whittling that down and trying to make sure the spirit is there…” he said.
“We get a lot of interest from people… everyone wants to write an Empire of the Sun song and, and it’s cool to write with other people for that stuff, but it’s always been quite a small group.

‘Now it’s just some production, pretty much… we’ve written a couple of really special cuts for this album that we brought Luke in for and Luke’s written on as well.”
