Elton John made light of his worsening eyesight while presenting the award for Best Original Score at the 2025 Golden Globes on Sunday night. While taking the stage with Brandi Carlile on Sunday, John playfully mistook the folklore singer for a completely different icon.
“I don’t know if you know, but there’s been a lot of stories going around about my regressive eyesight. I just want to reassure everybody that it’s not as bad as it seems,” John said onstage before his joke: “So I’m so pleased to be here with my co-host, Rihanna!”
At the beginning of last month, John confirmed that he had lost his vision after suffering from an eye infection over the summer. The infection happened as he spent time at his home in the south of France.
“I am healing, but it’s an extremely slow process and it will take some time before sight returns to the impacted eye,” he said. “I am so grateful for the excellent team of doctors and nurses and my family, who have taken such good care of me over the last several weeks.”
During the West End debut of the Devil Wears Prada musical last month, the music legend revealed that “now I have lost my sight.”
“I haven’t been able to see the performance, but I have enjoyed it,” John said onstage at London’s Dominion Theatre. “To my husband, who’s been my rock because I haven’t been able to come to many of the previews… It’s hard for me to see it, but I love to hear it, and it sounded good tonight.”
