With DZ Deathrays taking on “FU”, and WAAX returning the favour with a rendition of “Fired Up”, it’s a celebration of Brisbane rock.

Brisbane outfits DZ Deathrays and WAAX have somewhat joined forces, offering up a cover version of the other for an end-of-week musical offering.

Released today, the first of these covers sees DZ Deathrays paying tribute to their fellow Brisbanites by taking on their 2019 song, “FU”.

“One thing that is so rewarding about doing cover versions is learning how other song writers craft their music,” DZ Deathrays explain. “WAAX are one of our favourite bands so it’s been an honour to discover how ‘FU’ was put together all while giving it our own little spin! To me this song is pure passion and angst and it was an absolute dream to work on.”

Meanwhile, WAAX themselves return the favour by offering up a rendition of “Fired Up”, the first taste of DZ Deathrays’ upcoming studio album, Positive Rising: Part 2, which is set to arrive in July of 2021.

“To any guitar band in Australia, working with DZ is not something to be taken lightly,” WAAX note. “They’re truly iconic Brissie legends and we’ve grown up with and admire their forthright guitar riffs and chaotic drums.

“We kept on asking ourselves, ‘how would we have written “Fired Up”?’ We tried to keep those iconic DZ moments – huge guitar solo, driving drums, octave guitars FX – but make them ours.”

While both tracks are officially out today, the covers coincide with the announcement of DZ Deathrays’ collaboration with Built To Spill Wines, with “DZ Deathrays Positive Sparkling Cremant” being launched today.

As per a press release, “the special release Pet Nat is made up of certified organic chenin blanc from Margaret River, WA. Positive Sparkling Cremant is finished like traditional sparkling wine, making it the ultimate thirst crusher yet still ultra-crisp and clean.”

Pre-orders for the Pet Nat are available now along with a digital pre-order of DZ Deathrays’ new album, while physical copies of the record are also available for pre-order now.
