More than a year on from their latest album, Brisbane outfit DZ Deathrays have returned with news of their forthcoming fifth album, announcing the details of Positive Rising: Part 2.
Following on from the release of Part 1 in August of 2019, DZ Deathrays paired the announcement of their new record – which drops in July of 2021 – with the release of lead single “Fired Up”, which comes alongside an animated video directed by Thomas Rawle.
Originally transitioning through 15 different variants in its early stages, the group note that the track was something of a challenge. “Basically at some point Shane [Parsons; vocals, guitar] just turned ‘Fired Up’ into a big stadium-rocking-Bruce Springsteen-style-anthem and I guess that’s when we knew what we were dealing with,” explains drummer Simon Ridley.
Originally releasing Positive Rising: Part 1 in August of 2019, the album scored the group an ARIA nomination for Best Hard Rock/Heavy Metal Album, and received widespread acclaim from across the board. Having worked in Los Angeles for the to record Part 1, the group’s new album saw them return home to record the album in late 2019, working with producer Miro Mackie once again.
With the production of the record leading to something of a tonal shift, the group see Part 2 as serving as the second half to a whole, with the moodier focus of the album caused by the band seeking new perspectives from which to view the world and their music.
“‘Positive Rising’ is the closing song of the two-part album,” Parsons explains of the album’s title track and accompanying ethos. “The track comes from thoughts of an undercurrent of positivity throughout this world making its way to the surface. Starting small and developing into something that could potentially change lives for the better.”
DZ Deathrays’ “Fired Up” is out now, while Positive Rising: Part 2 will be released on July 9th, 2021, with pre-orders available now.
