Grammy-nominated, ARIA Award-winning DJ and producer Dom Dolla is ushering in 2025 with his highly anticipated new single, “Dreamin”, featuring US sensation Daya.
Sharing the inspiration behind “Dreamin”, Dolla said it was a reminder that nothing lasts forever, this too shall pass, so you might as well give it everything. “This record is about the flow state you can find yourself in when everything is going a little too well… the moment you’re struck by a tiny sobering piece of doubt that niggles at your peace of mind,” he said. “The challenge I gave myself with this record was to write the simplest melody I could muster (that didn’t drive me nuts).”
Initially apprehensive that the track would be right for the collaboration, Dolla says he brought the track to the studio where he met Daya for the first time anyway. “She is truly a talent to be reckoned with and has the most incredible voice,” he says. “Initially, I thought such a simple melody would be wasted on a voice as great as hers, but she brought such character to the idea that it ended up being exactly what the record needed and then some.”
For Daya, who has previously collaborated with the likes of The Chainsmokers, the experience was equally transformative. “I’m so glad I could help write and perform on this song— Dom is a master of his craft and it was exciting to dive into his world for it,” she says. “I hope people can embrace both the darkness and the levity in it all at once.”
The accompanying music video, shot in Tokyo and directed by Kyle Caulfield and Shevin Dissanayake, takes the emotional weight of “Dreamin” to new heights with its visually striking narrative, vividly depicting the song’s lyrical themes of escapism, anxiety, and fleeting moments of serenity.
It follows an anxious protagonist on a whirlwind week, beginning with him falling asleep on the streets and spiralling through various moments of solitude— a corporate office job, a lonely night at the bar, and an uncomfortable night spent on the cold subway station floor. The video encapsulates the feeling of being trapped in a cycle, desperately searching for peace, only to realise that it’s often fleeting and elusive.
Caulfield and Dissanayake shared their excitement about the project, saying, “Every part of making this video was incredibly special. From the formation of the idea, to building the crew, all the way through to the execution—it was so effortless and so much fun. The song fit the video perfectly and explained lyrically what the video couldn’t by itself, and vice versa. It’s since been cut together to be one of my favourite music videos I’ve ever worked on, and it’s really special to see it out in the world.”
The seamless collaboration between the video’s powerful visuals and the song’s emotive melody is already making an impact, with fans praising the emotional depth and artistry behind both. It’s a thought-provoking and pensive project that elevates Dom’s work to new artistic heights.
“Dreamin” comes after a career-defining year for Dolla (real name: Dominic Matheson), following a record-breaking Australian headline tour in December 2024, where he became the highest-selling individual electronic artist in Australia of all time, with over 170,000 tickets sold.
Dolla’s global dominance continues, with a string of major performances lined up for 2025. He’s already confirmed two nights at New York’s Madison Square Garden, headline sets at Ultra Music Festival and Bonnaroo, and an ongoing residency at LIV Las Vegas.
