Two decades after it became a worldwide sensation, English musician David Gray is set to visit Australia as part of his 20th anniversary tour of his commercial breakthrough, White Ladder.
First released back in late 1998, White Ladder served as Gray’s fourth album. However, despite finding a modest following in Ireland, the record didn’t receive a wider audience until Dave Matthews released it through his ATO Records label in early 2000.
Before long, the album was a smash, not only topping the charts in the UK and selling millions of copies globally, but remaining on the charts for a massive 175 weeks thanks to classic tracks such as “This Year’s Love”, “Please Forgive Me”, and “Babylon”.
“What happened with White Ladder involved more than music,” Gray said of its success. “It was a sort of heart and soul moment of total surrender for everybody involved, for me and the audience. That was it. It doesn’t get any better than that.”
Now, Gray is set to return to Australia in 2020 for a 20th anniversary tour, announcing shows in Brisbane, Melbourne, Sydney, and Fremantle earlier today. In addition to a trio of New Zealand shows, these performances will be the artist’s first trip to Australia since a memorable visit for Bluesfest in 2019.
“It’s the 20th anniversary of White Ladder, a unique record with its own remarkable history,” Gray said in a statement. “Jammed full with big, open hearted songs and flooded with a raw emotional energy. It’s an album that came from nowhere to steal the hearts of millions all over the world, completely transforming my life in the process.”
