Coterie Return with Reggae-Soaked Summer Hit ‘Pretty Gyal’

Coterie kickstart the summer with ‘Pretty Gyal,’ a soulful rock-reggae track and the opening wave of their 2026 season

Coterie are kicking off the warm weather with a new summer anthem, “Pretty Gyal”, out now thanks to NZ On Air.

The track lands just in time for sunburnt afternoons and windows-down drives, leaning into a reggae-laced hook that captures the brothers’ lifelong connection to the coast. A charismatic visualiser arrives alongside it, showing off the band’s infectious personalities as the summer heats up.

“Pretty Gyal” was written by Coterie alongside Josh Fountain (LEISURE, BENEE) and mixed by Simon Gooding (P!nk, TEEKS, Balu Brigada) and provides a fresh preview of what’s on the horizon for 2026.

“Wave 2 is in session & ‘Pretty Gyal’ is our first break – so feel the salt on ya sunkissed skin!” the band share. “We wrote this one in the back of a tour van, coast to coast, Whangaz to Mangaz! So roll the windows down & turn it to 11, summers back.. so ya boys are too.”

It’s a full-circle moment for the brothers — Brandford, Conrad, Joshua, and Tyler Fisher (Te Aupouri, Ngāpuhi & Ngāi Te Rangi) — who not so long ago were “doing stadium tours with Six60 on the weekend, then flying home to lay bricks on Monday morning.”

Since breaking out with their 2x-platinum hit “Cool It Down” in 2022, the group have quickly become festival regulars and one of the busiest live acts on both sides of the Tasman. They closed out 2023 by winning Best New Artist at the Rolling Stone Aotearoa Awards, then followed that up with Breakthrough Artist of the Year at the 2024 Aotearoa Music Awards.

Despite the accolades, the brothers insist little has changed. “We’re still just making music in our garage, it’s hectic,” Conrad told Rolling Stone AU/NZ last year. “We’re local boys who just live on the coast.”

That down-to-earth attitude has powered an intense couple of years on the road, including more than 20 headline shows across Australia and New Zealand and stretches through Europe and the UK supporting Lime Cordiale and The Cat Empire, plus plenty of festival appearances along the way.

Now, they’re rolling into another season built for their soundtrack: salty, sun-soaked, and full of energy. “Pretty Gyal” is the first taste, but they’ve promised a stacked run of new music to follow.

Coterie’s “Pretty Gyal” is out now.
