New Zealand psych-pop icon Connan Mockasin has announced he will return to Australia for the first time since 2019 for a series of shows.
Set for this October, Mockasin will bring his trio along for performances in Melbourne, Sydney, and Repentance Creek, all set to be immersive nights of music. He will share his genre-resisting catalogue that remain unmistakably his own: strange, intimate, and influential.
His first album under the Connan Mockasin stage name, Please Turn Me Into the Snat, was released in 2010, and re-released as Forever Dolphin Love the following year. In 2013, he released his second studio album, Caramel.
Five years later, the experimental musician released Jassbuster, a concept record recorded live in Paris in one week. It was accompanied by a surreal, five-part film titled Bostyn ‘n Dobsyn. In November of 2021, he followed up with Jassbusters Two, a sequel recorded with his touring band via live, freestyle sessions in Brooklyn.
Alongside his solo albums, Mockasin has also explored collaborative and experimental projects. He partnered with his father, Ade, on the intimate 2013 album It’s Just Wind, and joined forces with Sam Dust (LA Priest) for Soft Hair in 2016. He also collaborated with Dev Hynes and Mac DeMarco on Myths 001. Together, these releases showcase his whimsical, psychedelic sound world.
Mockain’s style has quietly shaped a generation of artists, with figures like Frank Ocean, Doja Cat, Tyler, the Creator, and Steve Lacy having all expressed admiration for his work. Some have collaborated directly, while others have taken cues from his sound.
Tickets to Mockasin’s upcoming Australian shows go on sale at 9am on Thursday, September 11th. More details here.
