Some of Australia’s biggest names have been tapped by MTV for their upcoming Unplugged At Home series, which kicks off late last week.

Ever since the MTV Unplugged series first began in the late ’80s, music fans have watched their favourite artists perform some of their biggest hits, deep cuts, and cover versions, typically without the aid of traditional instrument amplification.

In 2018, MTV Australia announced they would be bringing the format back to local shores, with the likes of Gang of Youths, Courtney Barnett, DMA’S, and The Rubens all taking to the stage as part of the iconic series.

Now, just a month on from the announcement that MTV had turned temporarily their focus to livestreaming due to the current COVID-19 pandemic with the launch of MTV Unplugged At Home, an Australian version of the series officially launched late last week.

Kicking off on Friday, May 1st with Cody Simpson, the 23-year-old performed his set from Los Angeles, performing his tracks “Captain’s Dance with The Devil, “Golden Thing”, and “Castle Wall”.

“It’s an interesting time for musicians with the nature of business changing so rapidly and everything still very up in the air for the future,” Cody explained to The Daily Telegraph.

“[I’m] trying to stay creative and keep the flow going while being stuck inside. The positive thing is I’m still able to do things like MTV Unplugged to keep the connection rocking with my listeners.”

In a statement regarding the new series, MTV noted that the series hopes to serve as a form of solace for homebound viewers, claiming it will “feature stripped-down, acoustic sets from artists performing their greatest hits, enabling music enthusiasts to find comfort in their new realities alongside fellow fans”.

The next edition of Australia’s MTV Unplugged At Home series is set to take place on Friday, May 8th, with G Flip performing. More acts for future episodes are set to be announced.
