31 years after New York dance group Deee-Lite exploded onto the scene with their instant classic “Groove Is In The Heart”, Aussie duo Client Liaison have given the track the slick reimagining we never knew it needed for the latest edition of triple j’s Like a Version.
Hitting up the triple j studios this morning, the pair – comprising Monte Morgan and Harvey Miller – were expanded to a quintet as they delivered a lusciously upbeat rework of the classic hit, armed with woodwinds, samples of the original, and what is likely the first slide whistle in recent Like a Version history.
“I feel like this song is in our DNA,” Monte explained in an interview after the fact. “I couldn’t tell if this song was from the ’70s, ’80s, or ’90s,” echoed Harvey. “It had this sort of timeless nature to it.”
The pair’s performance was also complemented by a rendition of their new single, “Elevator Up”, which was released just yesterday.
“‘Elevator Up’’is our dirtiest club tune yet,” the pair explained in a statement. “The song is for nights that don’t want to end. Always on the move, seeking a higher high but forever stuck in the party purgatory between heaven and hell. ‘Are we going up? Are we going down? Are we going home? Are we staying out?’”
Their appearance on Like a Version is undoubtedly a positive cap to a bittersweet week for the group, which sae COVID-related restrictions causing them to cancel the majority of their Australian tour, pushing back the release of their forthcoming album in response.
Client Liaison’s “Elevator Up” is out now, while new album Diplomatic Immunity will now be released on October 1st, with pre-orders available now.
