Clementine Valentine have announced their debut album, The Coin That Broke the Fountain Floor.
Formerly known as Purple Pilgrims, the dream pop duo that drew comparisons with Beach House and Cocteau Twins, sisters Clementine and Valentine Nixon decided to perform under their birth names this year.
Opening this exciting new chapter was their first single “Endless Night”, a truly majestic introduction to their refined sound.
“Like if Weyes Blood’s Natalie Mering cloned herself and formed an art-pop duo, Clementine Valentine pace their track to perfection, tenderly entwining their graceful vocals, raising their voices to the heavens when it’s needed,” Rolling Stone AU/NZ wrote of the single at the time.
Clementine Valentine have now followed that up with confirmation of a full-length album. Set for release in August, The Coin That Broke the Fountain Floor will feature “Endless Night” and new single “Time and Tide”, a track that’s just as quietly devastating and gorgeously ethereal as their previous release. This time, their vocals are much less subdued, instead powerfully reaching for higher notes, chasing euphoria and exultation.
“Without giving too much away, this song is a kind of mantra of radical acceptance. Our songs usually overflow with words and imagery, this one we consciously left open – you’re invited to fill the space in between,” the duo say about “Time and Tide”.
To celebrate their album release, Clementine Valentine will embark on a New Zealand tour in September, stopping in Wellington, Dunedin, Christchurch and Auckland (see full dates below).
Clementine Valentine’s “Time and Tide” is out now. The Coin That Broke the Fountain Floor is out August 25th via Flying Nun Records (pre-order here).
