Chris Brown has received a suspended jail sentence for a 2023 attack in a London nightclub. The R&B singer was sentenced to eight months in prison, suspended for 12 months, and will pay a £1,500 ($2,000 USD) fine toward the prosecution. His prison sentence was waived as a result, per Billboard.
On Feb. 19, 2023, Brown, along with co-defendant Omololu “Hoody Baby” Akinlolu, attacked music producer Abe Diaw at a London nightclub. Brown allegedly used a tequila bottle as a weapon and repeatedly punched at and stomped on Diaw.
Brown was originally charged with assault, suspicion of grievous bodily harm, and possession of an offensive weapon (a tequila bottle). He pleaded not guilty to all three charges in June and July 2025 that were then dismissed. This July, Brown pleaded guilty to “affray,” or, fighting with an individual in a public space which incites terror.
Diaw originally sued Brown in October 2023 for $16 million for emotional and physical harm; later, Brown was arrested in May 2025 after landing in Manchester, England, for a concert. Diaw dropped the lawsuit in June 2025.
Brown’s lawyer, Sallie Bennett-Jenkins KC, called the incident “ugly and unattractive” and said her defendant expressed “a profound apology to all those present.”
Amid this, Brown was trekking across North America with Usher for their joint R&B Tour but cancelled three shows to reportedly “prioritise the health and well-being of the touring party and crew” — these dates coincided with Brown’s preparation for his sentencing. The tour resumes Nov. 5 at Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
