Childish Gambino teams up with British singer-songwriter Jorja Smith and Ghanaian American star Amaarae on the new track “In the Night,” which was released Tuesday. The track relies on warm synths and a pulsating baseline to unravel the deep desire of a forbidden love. “Cause In the night, I dream of you/ Doesn’t matter what I do,” Gambino, real name Donald Glover, sings on the chorus.
The song, co-produced by Gambino, DJ Dahi, and Kurtis McKenzie, is the latest track off his sixth and final album, Bando Stone & the New World. Gambino played every track of his final album for fans at New York’s outdoor venue, Little Island on July 6.
“In the Night” follows the release of Max Martin and Ludwig Göransson-produced “Lithonia,” also featured on Bando Stone & the New World. At the 2024 BET Awards in June, Gambino revealed a trailer for a film of the same name that follows Gambino starring as Bando Stone. Gambino has dropped hints about the new album on his Instagram live, saying, “I feel like there’s just people not having enough fun… When I was a kid there was, like, big things that would unite us and I just feel bad for y’all. I feel bad for some of y’all.”
Gambino surprise-dropped Atavista in May, a reimagined version of his 2020 LP 3.15.20, which also featured two new tracks, “Atavista” and “Human Sacrifice.” Other tracks include songs like “Time” featuring Ariana Grande and “Psilocybae” with 21 Savage, Ink, and Kadhja Bonet, originally named “12.38.”
Gambino will begin his New World tour on Aug. 11 with Willow as a special guest. Stops on the New World tour include Oklahoma City, Detroit, Philadelphia, Brooklyn, and Atlanta. The tour concludes in Chicago on Oct. 3 before the international run begins.
