Bluegrass and roots musicians will all perform at the new multi-day streaming event Porch Pride: A Bluegrass Pride Queer-antine Festival, starting June 27th. The event takes place on the days when San Francisco Pride was originally scheduled; like many Pride celebrations in 2020, it’s since been canceled because of COVID-19.
Artists set to perform during the 10 hours of live music include Jake Blount & the Vox Hunters, Che Apalache frontman Joe Troop, Alice Gerrard, Front Country, Molly Tuttle, Justin Hiltner, Sam Gleaves, and Amythyst Kiah. Performances begin at 1 p.m. on June 27th and June 28th and can be streamed via Facebook, YouTube, and Bluegrass Pride’s website.
Originally launched as a side project of the California Bluegrass Association, Bluegrass Pride made a big splash with the LGBTQ+ and bluegrass communities when it marched in the parade at San Francisco Pride in 2017 and won Best of the Best among entrants. Since then, it has transformed into a 501c3 non-profit with the aim of welcoming performers of all backgrounds to bluegrass and old-time music.
Along with that mission, Porch Pride will raise funds for performers who normally rely on touring revenue for income but have no means to do so at the moment.
“When the COVID crisis forced us to cancel our in-person Pride celebrations in San Francisco, Portland, and Nashville, we knew we had to find another way to support our community with financial relief for vulnerable artists in need and with an uplifting event for our community to safely share from home,” Bluegrass Pride’s executive director Kara Kundert says in a statement.
