Billie Eilish‘s mega-hit “What Was I Made For?” has swept this year’s awards season, taking home a Grammy for Song of the Year and a Golden Globe for Best Original Song. Now, the superstar and her brother-collaborator Finneas have taken it to Hollywood, performing it at the 2024 Academy Awards.
Unlike the Grammys last month, where Eilish delivered the ballad in Barbie‘s 1965 Poodle Parade outfit, Eilish wore a Barbie-inspired suit and pink bowtie onstage in front of a brilliant pink backdrop. She stood next to Finneas, who played the delicate piano piece on a rotating platform accompanied by an orchestra. The pair earned a standing ovation from the crowd as they closed out the emotive song.

“What Was I Made For?” is up for Best Original Song this year. If Eilish wins, it will mark her second Oscar, after her James Bond theme “No Time to Die” took home Best Original Song in 2022. She’s up against the fellow Barbie track “I’m Just Ken” written by Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt, as well as Diane Warren’s “The Fire Inside” (for Flamin’ Hot), Scott George’s “Wahzhazhe (A Song for My People)” (for Killers of the Flower Moon), and Jon Batiste and Dan Wilson’s “It Never Went Away” (for American Symphony).
It’s been nearly three years since Eilish released Happier Than Ever, the follow-up to her star-making debut When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? But the wait is over: Eilish recently announced via Instagram that her new record is mastered (though the title and release date have yet to be revealed).
