BAYNK has shared two new songs from his upcoming album ahead of his headline shows in Australia next month.
The Grammy-nominated New Zealand electronic artist’s latest tracks, “Feel” and “Blood”, will feature on Senescence. The album will be released episodically in two-song bundles, leading up to its full release later in the year.
“’Feel’ is about not taking yourself too seriously. Trying not to let life’s challenges take you down before you’re even out the door. Let your gut and passion dictate your actions,” BAYNK says about the first track.
“The second verse references a quote from a Charles Bukowski poem, ‘Don’t try..’, which I found particularly helpful in writing this song. I was finding that trying to force a certain song or sound out of me would always lead to mediocre work. Instead, I needed just to let what happens, happen, and not to think too much about what was pouring out of me or critique it heavily in the moment.
“I wrote the initial song in Berlin with Max Byrne (aka Golden Vessel, 1tbsp) when I was feeling rather under the weather which is attributed to some of the huskiness in the first verse. It was finished with the help of Annika Wells, Joe Mason, and Rutger van Woudenberg (The Nicholas).”
Last month, BAYNK released the first two SENESCENCE tracks – “Inches (Prelude)” and “Fool for You”.
He will headline shows at Melbourne’s 170 Russell, Sydney’s Metro Theatre, and Woolloongabba’s Princess Theatre, at the end of July (see full dates below). These will be BAYNK’s biggest shows to date in support of his second album, SENESCENCE, and three of only five limited live performances this year.
The producer first broke out with two positively received EPs, Someone’s EP I (2017) and Someone’s EP II (2019), and hit singles including “go with u”, which has been streamed over 70 million times on Spotify alone to date.
After the release of his Grammy-nominated debut album, ADOLESCENCE, in 2021, Pitchfork dubbed BAYNK’s record “his most meticulous to date.” ADOLESCENCE featured guest spots from Tinashe, Cosmo’s Midnight, and DRAMA.
Where ADOLESCENCE explored themes of growth, development and boundless possibilities of youth (hence the album title), SENESCENCE will explore the passing of time and the realisations that physical life doesn’t last forever.
BAYNK ‘s “Feel” and “Blood” is out now.
