Allday Returns With New Single, ‘Eyes on The Prize’

“After making other genres for a while, making rap is fun again,” Allday explained of the new track, which sees him returning to his roots.

It feels like only yesterday that Allday was reinventing himself with the release of the more indie-rock influenced Drinking with My Smoking Friends album, but now, he’s revisited his roots with new single, “Eyes on The Prize”.

Released today, “Eyes on The Prize” sees Allday returning to the sort of sound that made him famous close to a decade ago, and in fact, is titled in a manner reminiscent of his 2013 track “Eyes on The Road”. Utilising slick production, hazy vocals, and devastatingly-clever rhymes, it shows that even after dipping his toe into the world of another genre, Allday still has a love for the hip-hop game.

“The day I started this beat I was wearing a world cup soccer t-shirt that said ‘EYES ON THE PRIZE’ and that sounded like a good title,” Allday explained in a statement. “I took it to Simon Lam to finish the beat. I was just saying lines into the mic to make Simon laugh. We thought it sounded pretty fun so that is the song. It’s not too deep.

“After making other genres for a while, making rap is fun again.”

Though he’d never expressed an explicit distaste for rap previously, Allday’s fourth album – Drinking with My Smoking Friends – was indeed a stylistic shift, with the record focusing heavily on guitars and indie-rock for what Rolling Stone Australia labelled as “his most unguarded album yet”.

While it remains to be seen whether “Eyes on The Prize” is the first taste of Allday’s next project or a simple step back in time before he once again subverts all expectations, it proves that no matter what he sets his mind on, he’s bound to kill it.

Allday’s “Eyes on The Prize” is out now.
