Melbourne-based, Germany-born ARIA-nominated producer Alice Ivy has shared her new single, “Broke My Heart”.
It’s packed with impressive power, with UK grime star and Australian pop favourite Mallrat joining Ivy on the rack. After working on “Broke My Heart” for a while in Melbourne, Ivy put it to the side after feeling it was incomplete.
“A few months later, I travelled to the UK to play some shows and I saw Jelani Blackman perform at Great Escape. He was so good!” recalls Ivy. “I went up to him afterwards and floated the idea of working on something. A little while later, I sent him the demo with Mallrat and asked if he wanted to put a verse on it and he absolutely nailed it! I love how this song makes you feel like you’re floating, Mallrat and Jelani’s vocals are both so smooth.”
Ivy and Mallrat are no strangers to each other – the former co-wrote two tracks on the latter’s debut album – and Mallrat was only too happy to collaborate with the musician on her new single.
“Annika [Schmarsel] is one of my best friends and she’s so pretty and sexy and funny and one of my favourite collaborators!” she says. “It always feels like we’re just hanging out whenever we’re in the studio, so things came together really naturally for “Broke My Heart”.
Blackman, meanwhile, knew immediately he wanted to be part of the track. “I’ve been into this tune from the second I heard it, was so easy to write for because I fully get that feeling of heartbreak, because sometimes it’s unintentional and you still love the person,” he reveals.
“Broke My Heart” builds the hype for Ivy’s upcoming third studio album, Do What Makes You Happy, which is set for release later this year. The album will feature previous single “Howlin’ at the New Moon”, which featured an equally stellar guest turn from Mayer Hawthorne.
Alice Ivy’s “Broke My Heart” (ft. Mallrat & Jelani Blackman) is out now via Helix Records.
